Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) are not just buzz words. It is not just to check a box. It is imperative for companies to innovate, grow and succeed. It’s simply the right thing to do. Diversity and inclusion are about embracing differences and similarities. We can do this by being more curious about others – having respect and empathy while doing so. When we recognize and value that our diverse minds, personalities, perspectives, and experiences are what make people thrive and feel a sense of belonging, we become the bridge to creativity, innovation, productive and successful businesses. Let us journey together to be more diverse, equitable and inclusive – being the bridge for others along the way!
Organizations that aspire to be more diverse, equitable, and inclusive recognize that it is a marathon, not a sprint. It will take time to move people from DEIB awareness to sustainable change in behaviors, attitudes, policies, and practices that foster an inclusive culture. You must start with a strategic roadmap that will be the organization's north star -- helping to guide you along your DEIB journey, one step at a time.
Psychological safety and trust create inclusive cultures and environments where people feel comfortable sharing their ideas, questions, experiences and mistakes without any judgement or negative repercussions. This can foster a feeling of belonging – inspiring people to bring their authentic selves to the workplace. This results in more engaged employees who can thrive and do their best work to help their organization win.
If you have brains, you have biases. Our brains are hardwired to have biases. But that is no excuse not to continually disrupt how those biases show up in the workplace and in our personal lives. You can learn how biases affect your understanding, actions and decisions. The more we understand our biases and practice disrupting biases, the more inclusive we will become.
We each play a part in building cultures and a world that is more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. It's how you show up as our authentic self. It's how you create space for others to do the same. Look at your circles of influence – family, friends, colleagues, and community – and start being more inclusive and equitable in those circles. That is where you'll make the biggest impact. It starts with you. You are the bridge!
